Indian Meal Moth Treatment Preparation

Indian Meal Moths like most other “stored product pests” can most easily be held at bay by implementing a prevention plan.

Implementing the following steps will help you in preventing a “stored product pest” infestation.
  1.  Purchase packaged food in small quantities that can be used quickly.  Rotate packaged foods using the oldest products first.  Use open packages before unopened products.
  2. When you purchase packaged foods such as flour, cake mix or corn meal, make sure the seal is not broken, which could allow insects to enter and breed.  Check the expiration date on the product
  3. Store grain based products in insect-resistant containers.  Containers which have twist on lids and flexible seal gaskets work very well.
  4. If long term storage is needed you may consider placing those items in the freezer.
  5. Sanitation is of vital importance.  Do not allow food particle to accumulate providing an infestation opportunity.  Be aware of how and where you store dry pet food and bird seed.

The following steps will help you and your Pest Manage Professional (PMP) in gaining control.
  1. Find the source of the infestation by visually inspecting all package foods for signs of insects.  Dispose of all products that are infested.
  2. Empty all cabinets and remove items from shelves.  Vacuum and wash all surfaces with soap and water.
  3. Your friendly PMP will then provide a treatment program that will insure minimum risk with maximum benefits.
  4. For a select number of “Stored Product Pests”  a pheromone trap may be used in monitoring any reoccurring infestation.
